Located opposite the Indian Ocean and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Smiths Beach Resort enjoys a remarkable coastal setting in Western Australia’s Margaret River Region.
We recognise the importance of monitoring how energy, water and other resources are used across our Resort operations.
Over the years, we have introduced a range of practical initiatives, from installing solar panels and conserving water to supporting local vegetation management and reducing the use of selected disposable products.
Here are some of the measures in place at Smiths Beach Resort.
Architecture & Design
The architecture of Smiths Beach Resort has been thoughtfully considered in relation to its coastal surroundings.
Positioned behind the natural sand dunes, the Resort’s low-rise buildings feature colours and materials selected to complement the surrounding landscape.
Solar Energy
In 2022, Smiths Beach Resort installed 270 solar panels as part of an investment in on-site electricity generation.
In 2025, the system generated 156,250 kWh of electricity, supplying approximately 18% of the Resort’s total annual electricity consumption.
The system enables the Resort to generate electricity from sunlight, supplementing electricity supplied through the grid and reducing our reliance on grid electricity.

Water Management
Water is an important resource in the Margaret River Region, and managing its use is a consideration in our daily operations.
All our five-star luxury accommodation within the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) portfolio features Phoenix NX Iko showerheads, with a 3-star Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) rating and a flow rate of 8 litres per minute, alongside dual-flush toilets.
We also encourage guests to reuse towels where practical, with additional towels and bedding available on request.
Native Gardens and Vegetation Management
Our landscaped gardens feature a selection of native and Australian plants, including Peppermint Trees and Kangaroo Paws, chosen to complement the coastal environment.
We also undertake management of Arum Lily, an introduced invasive plant species found throughout the Margaret River Region. Controlling its spread on Resort grounds is part of our ongoing grounds maintenance.
Organic Cotton Beach Towels and Tote Bags
We consider material composition and available supplier certifications when reviewing selected products used throughout the Resort.
Our Smiths Beach Resort branded beach towels are manufactured in Turkey and supplied by Bambury, which confirms they are made from 100% organic cotton, excluding labels and accessories. The towels are produced by a manufacturer certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
Our branded tote bags are manufactured in India using 100% organic cotton fabric, excluding trims and accessories. The organic cotton fabric used in their manufacture is supported by GOTS transaction certification and a manufacturer declaration linking the material to the Resort’s supplied bags.
These product-specific specifications form part of our ongoing review of supplier materials and purchasing practices.
Reducing Single-Use Products
We have introduced refillable, larger-format bathroom amenity bottles in place of smaller individual bottles throughout our accommodation.
Our guest amenities are supplied by Perricone MD, and we continue to review the materials and packaging used in selected guest products.
Wooden clothes hangers and glass items are also used in place of some plastic alternatives.
Recycling Facilities
Recycling facilities are available throughout the Resort to encourage guests to separate recyclable materials from general waste.
Accommodation kitchens include dedicated recycling sections, while outdoor recycling bins are identified by their yellow lids.
We encourage guests to use these facilities and follow local recycling guidelines during their stay.
Digital Guest Information
Where practical, we provide guest information electronically, including pre-arrival communications and check-in documentation.
Digital information helps reduce the need for printed documents, while printed copies remain available on request.
Explore the Coast on Foot
One of the pleasures of staying at Smiths Beach Resort is the opportunity to explore the surrounding coastline without needing a car.
Smiths Beach is located directly opposite the Resort, offering easy access to swimming, surfing and beach walks.
The renowned Cape to Cape Track also passes the Resort, providing access to walking trails through sections of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and its diverse coastal landscapes.
Discover the Region’s Natural Environment
We work with local tourism operators who offer guided experiences across the Margaret River Region, giving guests opportunities to learn more about its landscapes, wildlife and natural history.
Experiences include guided coastal walks, cave tours, whale watching and wildlife encounters.

Connecting with Wadandi Culture
Smiths Beach Resort acknowledges the Wadandi people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which the Resort operates.
We encourage guests to discover more about the region’s Aboriginal cultural heritage through experiences led by local Aboriginal guides.
These experiences offer opportunities to learn about traditional knowledge, connections to Country and the cultural significance of the surrounding landscape.

Our Ongoing Approach
We recognise that operating a resort requires energy, water and other resources, and that our operations have an environmental impact.
Our approach is to continue reviewing how these resources are used, maintaining the initiatives already in place and identifying practical opportunities for improvement.
We look forward to sharing this beautiful part of Western Australia with our guests while remaining mindful of the natural environment that makes Smiths Beach so special.
