An Investment in On-Site Solar Electricity Generation

In August 2022, Smiths Beach Resort installed 270 solar panels as part of our ongoing investment in the Resort’s facilities and infrastructure.

Located alongside the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and opposite the Indian Ocean, Smiths Beach Resort enjoys a remarkable natural setting. We recognise the importance of considering how energy and other resources are used across our operations.

The installation of solar panels was an important step in introducing on-site renewable electricity generation to the Resort.

Supporting Our Resort’s Energy Requirements

As our facilities have evolved, including upgrades to our heated swimming pool, so too have our electricity requirements.

The solar installation enables us to generate a portion of the electricity used by the Resort directly from sunlight, supplementing electricity supplied through the grid.

In 2025, our solar system generated 156,250 kWh of electricity, supplying approximately 18% of the Resort’s total annual electricity consumption.

Approximately 99.6% of the solar electricity generated was used on site, with the remaining 0.4% exported to the electricity grid.

This investment allows us to incorporate renewable electricity generation into our operations while continuing to provide the facilities and comfort our guests enjoy.

About Our Solar Panel Installation

Completed in August 2022, the installation includes:

  • 270 solar panels installed across the Resort.

  • Approximately 500 square metres of solar panel surface area.

  • An original projected annual electricity generation of 164,000 kWh (164 MWh), based on estimates made at the time of installation.

  • Actual electricity generation of 156,250 kWh (156.25 MWh) in 2025, representing approximately 95% of the original annual projection.

Actual electricity generation varies depending on weather conditions, seasonal sunlight and system performance.

2025 generation and consumption figures are based on the Resort’s electricity and solar monitoring records. Electricity exports for January to June 2025 are estimated using 2026 data.

Looking Ahead

Our solar panel installation forms part of a wider approach to reviewing resource use and operational practices at Smiths Beach Resort.

Alongside this investment, we have introduced other practical measures, including refillable bathroom amenities and changes to selected single-use guest products.

We continue to review our operations and consider opportunities to improve how resources are managed across the Resort.
